United in apathy
NS September 19th, 2010
Yesterday Noble Husband and I sat on a bench together, watching with bemused smiles as our daughter stripped down to her knickers and submerged herself into a large bucket of water in the children’s park we were in for NB’s 2nd birthday celebration. She and another girl, both in only their underwear, had a grand time getting completely soaked and then rolling around in the sand adjacent to the water play area. At one point NG was writhing on the sand, laughing hysterically and making what can only be described as maniacal monkey sounds.
I looked at NH and asked, “Should I go get her to stop or at least put her clothes back on?”
He replied, “Nah. She’s having a good time. I can’t be bothered. Can you?”
“Nah.”
We ‘clinked’ the paper coffee cups we were each holding and exchanged wry glances.
“This idle parenting stuff is great, isn’t it?”
“It really is.”

I love a good bit of idle parenting. What’s wrong with it anyway? Especially if the kids are having fun. At least she had her underwear on which is more than my boys did the other day when they decided to moon the playground and do laps of the local field with their trousers etc. round their ankles. I was torn between pretending that they didn’t belong to me and having to actually catch them.

Idle parenting, otherwise known as benign neglect. The only way to get through it all IMO.
Well, I misread that first time round as “ideal parenting stuff” if that’s any comfort.

Good lord, this sounds great. Kids should be allowed to be in their underwear in outdoor pools! As if underwear are so different than bikini bottoms or swim trunks? Whatevs.
I started my family in a seaport town where ppl were cool with little kids playing naked on the beach. It was so lovely.

Sounds fine to me, I am the mum who lets her boys go naked in the sea. I am all about relaxed parenting

I have very fond memories of splashing nearly naked in the big metal wash tub in Grandma’s yard when I was a young child and running through the sprinklers to cool off on a blistering summer day. The unfettered innocent freedom of childhood only lasts so long, so yes, let them enjoy it. Glad you had a lovely relaxed day.
