You can teach a new dog cool tricks
NS June 24th, 2009
I woke up at 7am this morning, completely perplexed. The Noble Baby hasn’t slept past 5.30 since we arrived, with some days starting at 3 or 4. I picked him up and walked into the living room, where I heard my sister’s and TNC’s voices. I assumed TNC had only just woken up as well so asked my sister, “Did she come and get you just now?” to which she replied, “Um, no. She came and woke me up at 5.30 this morning. When I asked her where you were she said ‘Mummy is so very tired, she needs to sleep.’ I assume you put her up to this?”
I wish I could take the credit for this stroke of genius but, hand on heart, I didn’t. I have to say though, I really, really like it. And god bless her cottons, I really did need that extra bit of sleep. I’m sure her motivation was nothing more than a desire to play with her fun auntie instead of boring ol’ mum but I’d like to think her toddler’s intuition played a part. Whatever the reason, it was most welcome. I think I’m officially over the jetlag.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go drink a cold beer on the deck and later, after the kids are in bed and I’ve had some lovely grilled chicken and vegetables, watch fireflies light up amongst the leaves of the trees swaying in the balmy breeze.
I could really, really get used to this again.

The “Pass the baby/toddler on to the fresh, well-rested Aunt” is a time honored tradition. Well done, I say!
Oh, how lovely! Hope she keeps it up.
Ah yes – but think of the freezing winters there as opposed to… our freezing winters. Well, our chilly wet and frankly dismal winters. Is this working yet?
Oh yes, fireflies. I would have missed them, if I were you.
genius child. i didn’t really mind getting up with her at all, but i was certain that you had put her up to it!
Hahaha…fantastic

Why. aren’t. I. there. GAH!
Nice! I’m still waiting for the day that my boy lets me sleep past 7. Although with a new one on the way, that seems unlikely.
I agree with A Free Man. My 5 year old is a bloody nightmare with waking early and deems it the sensible hour for everyone to join him. And I should be on the deck right now, sunning my still pale little legs (tho my face and arms/shoulders are nicely tanned, so I look very mis-matched). Hope you are still enjoying the Chicago sunshine and the kids are still sleeping – and when you wake at 7am know that somewhere in Chicago, possibly nearby, I have been awake AGAIN since 5.30am. (Hey – and if you fancy a playdate in the next week or so, let me know…)
A beer on the deck. That’s sounds really great. Oh, wait a minute, I don’t have a deck. Oh, and running out to buy a six-pack of beer in PA requires all kinds of tricks that I’m just not up to in this kind of heat (really. This state has the Puritans beat hands-down). Hope you enjoyed it!
somewhat like when TNC came into the office and says to me “mummy is very thirsty. she wants a drink.” i knew it was cocktail hour at that point!
sounds lovely.
