NS: mother, wife, blogger. Author?
NS April 8th, 2009
I have decided to write a non-fiction book. This brings up many questions:
Am I mad?
What will I write about, exactly? I have a central idea but so many directions it could go in
Where do I begin?
Do I need an agent?
If so, how do I find one?
How will I find the time?
How long will it take me?
Is this the stupidest idea ever?
Am I delusional?
Be brutally honest with me. Oh, and, if you fancy it, guess what I’m wanting to write about. I’d be interested to see what subject matter others think I could (or at least would) write a book about.

Oh, how cool! Good for you! I have a nonfiction idea bouncing around in my head but I think it will take at least two more years to formulate. Nonfiction DOES work differently than fiction, in that you often get the agent and contract BEFORE you write the book…and you have to write a book proposal with sample chapters…there are lots of good books on how to write a nonfiction book but I think the best is by Lee Gutkind, Creative Nonfiction. I’d recommend ordering it post haste!
i have a good idea of what your subject will be, but only because you kind of told me! i won’t spoil it here for everyone else.
what an exciting decision!!! good luck!
I don’t have any answers to most of your questions. Sorry! But I did want to say that I don’t think you’re mad for wanting to write a book. I think you’d be a fantastic writer…if your blog is anything to go by. Its well written, funny, thought provoking and it often leaves me wanting to do more…more for women and mothers alike. Yours is one of my favorite blogs and I would definitely buy and read a book you’d write. Go on and take the plunge…I’m sure you’ll do a great job. Good luck!
@Courtney – Thanks for the book rec, I’ll definitely check it out.
@Andrea – Thanks sis.
@Jenny – That was a real boost to my confidence. Thank you!
This is good news! I would buy your book too.
My guess is you will write about natural childbirth, parenting and all the other stuff women have to handle nowadays.
Like Jenny said, I don’t have the answers to any of your questions but YES definitely write a book. You have the talent and the motivation, go for it.
Hey! I have along awaited to hear these words from you
)
I know whatever you choose to tackle subject wise will be stunningly & thoroughly written and researched….
All excited for you X
@Lizzy – You’re pretty close to the mark there. It’s definitely concerning motherhood and feminism. Just trying to narrow my focus.
@siobhan – Thanks for the encouragement!
@emms – Ta, babe. Oh, must speak to you re: poss trip up to Scotland in August/September. Will ring or Skype this weekend.
how exciting! whatever you do, i’m sure it’ll be a success
you are a fantastic writer. get a small voice recorder and keep it close for when it is not handy to jot down your ideas. Be sure to back-up voicenotes in case the little ones get a hold of it. Good Luck.
How about “I can’t wait and I’m going to keep pressing ‘refresh’ on Amazon search until I get a result”?!?!
I only know a couple of people who’ve written non-fiction books and they seem, at least to some extent, to be single-minded, driven by aspiration and be oblivious to much criticism.
I’m sure you’ll succeed. It’s what ‘proper’ writers do :p
