I have a placenta in my freezer
NS February 12th, 2009
True. But I don’t know if I want to advertise that fact to the general public on my chest.*

This gives new meaning to “The personal is political.”

Yes its still there 5 months on, dearest.
I now only freeze unopened packs of red meat.
Are you suggesting that placenta in the freezer is somehow unusual or gross? I thought everyone had one lurking behind the petit pois!
Ermmm… we don’t… We may have frozen mice but that’s our only refrigeration vice and the snake must eat!!
24 bucks for a tee-shirt with microscopically-fonted writing seems a bit much too!! If you had one of those you might end up with people-of-below-average-eyesight closely examining your chest in an attempt to read the writing… at least that’d be their excuse.
Are there any known examples of couples who’ve divorced and battled over who gets their kids frozen placenta!?!? It must have come up before somewhere.
So that’s what I saw next to the frosty bottle of vodka! I love you but…ick.
On a somewhat related note, did you see Salma Hayek breastfeeding another woman’s child in Africa? I thought it was sweet, although I wouldn’t do it myself unless it was a life or death situation, but of course a lot of people are saying yuck. Even La Leche League does not endorse the practice, it seems.
Did you really keep your placenta? and us so, why?
Can I ask, without casting any aspersions, why?
@Brinkster – I’d love to see the paperwork for that particular ‘custody battle.’
@Andrea – How did I know you would say ‘ick’? I knew it’d be either that or ‘ga-ross!’
@Lizzy – Yes, read all about the Hayek furor. Same ol’ same ol’, reaction-wise, really. Of course LLL can’t endorse cross-nursing because it CAN be dangerous in that some diseases can be passed through breastmilk.
@A Free Man (and Lizzy) – Yes, it’s really in my freezer. I had a home birth and immediately afterwards when they asked me what I wanted to do with it, I was too tired to decide so just asked them to wrap it up and stick it in my freezer. I asked the midwife to take it when she visited me a few days later but she didn’t have the proper biohazard container with her so said I’d have to bring it to the hospital myself. Driving a half hour, paying to park, with two kids in tow, etc.. just to drop it off seemed a pain so it’s remained in the freezer until I can be bothered to dispose of it properly or do something with it. Might plant it under a new rose bush this spring out in the garden, just to save myself a trip to the hospital.
Plant it. That’s the protocol.
Also, Salma Hayek has earned much respect in my eyes for breastfeeding another child. LLL really should soften their cross-nursing views.
