Who are you and where do you come from?

NS February 5th, 2009

excuse the lack of capitalization and punctuation going on in here something funky is going on with my keyboard and will not allow me to use any of the shift keys> anyhoo>>>

i am declaring an official delurking day here at noble savage because a) i have never done one and b) i am a nosy so_and_so and am curious who might be reading and never comments> i have a stats program that tells me where people are and how long they stay and so on but i generally have the same dozen people commenting regularly even though more than twice that number are subscribers> so go on introduce yourself: tell me how you found me> what you enjoy reading about< what you do not (within reason: no trolls or rants about how crap i am< please) or would like to see more of> if you@re already a regular commenter i@d still like to hear from you too __ refresh my memory on how you came to find my site or how we know each other> i promise i will not make anyone do a group hug and i don@t bite>

god this keyboard crap is driving me nuts> if anyone has a clue what might be going on with that do let me know!

Well, I think I found your blog a while back through the F word. Can’t recall if you wrote an article, commented on mine, or it was just on general comments though!

I like reading it all – the general daily life diary stuff and the more feminist stuff too.

  2. Anji says:

I think I’ve commented once or twice but I’m not sure. Just in case I haven’t – hello!

  3. andrea says:

We met 12 years ago on the 3rd floor of Smith! The first night we really hung out was when you took a bunch of us to your sister’s apartment for a party, and when we got back that night we found out that Princess Diana had just been killed in a car accident. Bizarre.

  4. Charlotte says:

You know me, the one from Germany. I can’t remember who found who first, it was so long ago – in blogging terms, we’ve know each other for about two decades.

  5. Lizzy says:

I think I found you through Charlotte’s blogroll.

  6. Abigail says:

We post on a forum together and even met for drinks/dinner once! ;)

  7. Karen says:

I’ve no idea where I found you, probably on someone’s blogroll. I enjoy reading most everything you write! I live in Central Florida, work full-time, have an 18-year-old son in his senior year of high school and a 25-year-old daughter with a 3-year-old of her own.

  8. Nikki says:

I’ve commented a few times but hi anyway, i used to subscribe to American Expats forum and i think you must have posted your blog on there. I only really read two blogs now, the others all finished so i was down to just Dooce when you took a break, i need to find some new ones but i also have a teensy person to look after atm so like you, not much time to catch up. I enjoy reading all your posts really, nothing specifically. Please dont stop! xx

  9. Good Morning- I have commented a few times but I believe I found you looking for American expat blogs before I moved overseas!

  10. Jenn says:

I don’t know how I found your blog but I love it! I’m in Seattle. I made my first trip to London in November, loved it so much I’m coming back in May.

  11. Albert Swingding says:

We met 10 years ago in sunny England and you are my birthday buddy! :o )

  12. jen says:

    i don’t know you at all, i’m just a random troll ;)

  13. A Free Man says:

Well, e.e., I’ve been around for a while but can’t remember where I linked from originally. The Vol Abroad maybe? But I’m not a lurker, so you’re not really talking to me. ;)

  14. Hi!!

I’m Annie from Canada and I blog at PhD in Parenting. I think I found you first when you linked to or commented on my blog, but I’m not sure! In any case, happy to have found you.

    Annie

  15. the bad aunt says:

I have known you forever. But it is nice hear your thoughts and opinions, especially since I live in the States and you live abroad. You were always a delightful child and you have become a wonderful woman. I am proud of you.

  16. andrea says:

and you know me – your big sis and biggest fan. xx

  17. joanna says:

Not sure how I found you, probably MDC, and when I read something funny about my homeland I got hooked. And I really appreciate that you keep reading my blog… thanks!

  18. Strawberry says:

Hello. You know I read you. :)

  19. LindsayM says:

Gosh, I don’t know what year on amexpats, 2005 possibly!

I don’t comment as much as I should!

I like reading everything, I think!

  20. NS says:

@Ruth – Yes, definitely found each other’s sites through The F Word. I remember agreeing with nearly everything that you said and so had to check out my kindred spirit’s blog. Glad I did!

@Anji – I remember your couple of comments. Hello!

@Andrea – 12 years?! My god it doesn’t seem that long ago at all. I remember that night very well. All of our adolescent energy and optimism and hope for the future. So glad I met you and became your friend.

@Charlotte – We’re practically childhood friends in blog years. I found your site through a random internet search for book blogs and fell in love with your writing straight away. Plus, you put me in your Tales From The Web zine twice and I thought that was pretty cool. :)

@Lizzy – More blogroll love from Charlotte. Me likey! Welcome to you.

@Abigail – I wish we could’ve gotten together more than that one time, though it was a very memorable occasion, I remember. That nutty woman who joined the gathering made the night interesting to say the least.

@Karen – Welcome! Nice to see you saying hello.

@Nikki – Am flattered that it’s just me and Dooce in your blog world. ;) Thanks for reading.

@bohemianbailie – I remember you because of your distinctive name. Whereabouts overseas did you move? Was it Sweden or some other Scandinavian country?

@Jenn – Good luck with the move! London is fantastic.

@Albert Swingding – Love the pseudonym, birthday buddy. :D

    @jen – Shoo, troll, shoo! ;)

@A Free Man — e.e.; that’s cute. Yes, believe it was Vol Abroad that linked us in. Where has she gone, btw?

@Annie – I think I found your site through MDC, it was in your signature or a thread and liked it straight away. I value your great posts and the thought and time you put into them. Thank you!

@the bad aunt – Aww, shucks! You’ve always been my favourite aunt, even if you are a bit ‘bad’. I like ya that way! ;)

@andrea – Hi sis! Thanks for being such a support, it means the world to me.

@Joanna – I always wondered how you stumbled upon my site. MDC explains it! As I was saying yesterday though, don’t feel guilty if you don’t have time to keep up. Words will keep, children and jobs won’t. :)

@Strawberry – Yep. And glad we’ve kept in touch now that you’ve left the site where we originally met.

@LindsayM – I think it was 2005, yes. You’re missed at Expats. Glad I can keep up with your news on your blog too. G is so grown up!

  21. Sarah says:

I’m sure I stumbled upon you from an expats forum or another expat blog… who knows. I don’t comment enough but I love your writing style and humour.

So yeah, just incase I don’t comment again for a few posts do know that I’m reading!

  22. Signor Dos Empanadas says:

I met you at a Beer Festival on the 13th of June, 1998. Despite being several years younger than me, you had a certain air of confidence about you that I found intriguing.

  23. Becky says:

I can’t remember how I found you, but as a Brit living in the US, I like reading the ex-pat thing from the other side. Sometimes it raises my hackles a bit but that’s just m being defensive about home. And I like your feminism too.

  24. Not a lurker as such but our first acquaintance was in your harried house-hunting days and now as nearly-neighbours in our slice of halcyon suburbia!

Was it fluff/crap under the SHIFT key that was the problem?

  25. Mette says:

I’ve been following your blog for around a year now – I stumbled upon it after moving from Denmark to London while browsing the internet for blogs about other expats.

I haven’t commented before, but I read all your posts because they are intelligent, personal and honest – and I appreciate the feminist perspective :-)

  26. We both live in Worcester Park. Apparently.

  27. Lyn says:

Well, I have known you longer than anybody else in the world and I always enjoy reading your blog. It gives me more insight to your heart and soul. I am proud of you dear daughter.

  28. Sif says:

Hi! I think I’ve commented once or twice. I don’t actually remember how I came across your blog — it was a link from somewhere and I love the title of your blog. I keep coming back because I’m also an expat living in the London area and also have two young children. I think we must live somewhat near each other because I loved your post about Kingston (I could relate to that on some many levels — the crowdedness that is Kingston on a weekend and not having owned a car made in this century!!). I love your “feminazi” posts too — they are truly excellent!!

  29. Amy says:

    Hiya! I read it, Amity…usually daily. :)

Funnily enough, I was thinking of having a de-lurking day on MY blog too. Curiosity has been getting the best of me to know the names that match my stats! :)

  30. emms says:

I know you in real life! Instantly connected with you, your wit, ballsy attitude and confidence struck a note!
But life gets in the way of our day-to-day friendship, distance and domestics in particular.

I love your blog because you show immense courage and integrity in the topics you discuss. I find that I learn not only many things about you, but also about myself. Thank you for all your posts…

  31. NS says:

@Sarah – Likewise; I read your blog but rarely comment. Will try to say hello more.

@Signor Dos Empanadas – An air of confidence, eh? That may have just been the beer talking. ;)

@Becky – You’re a braver soul than me; I sometimes find it difficult to read expat blogs from the opposite perspective because of the whole hackles-raising thing (it’s inevitable, I think) but it definitely makes one think about their homeland differently, which I think can be a very good thing. I hope I don’t make you bristle too much! I do love Britain, even with its flaws. You take care of my homeland and I’ll take care of yours. Deal?

@Brinkster – Nice to have finally met you in person the other day. Your family is gorgeous and you were all so approachable. Thanks for helping a WP newbie out…

    @Mette – Thank you, that’s very kind. :)

@Worcester Park – Indeed, we do. Apparently.

    @Lyn – Thanks Mom.

@Sif – Ah, a kindred spirit in the madness that is Kingston on a Saturday (especially in summer). Will check out your site!

@Amy – Do it, it’s fun and informational!

@Emms – Thank you babe, that means a lot. I really wish we weren’t so far apart. I need to see my fellow wine-drinking, harried, creative and fabulous mum friend more often!

Thank you all for coming out to say hello. If there are still others reading who haven’t commented yet — don’t be shy!

  32. Emily Barton says:

Well, I’m not exactly a “lurker,” as I do comment sometimes, but thought I’d tell you I found you through Becky. I was immediately interested having, in a past life, been an American living in Britain.

  33. Abby says:

    Hi, I guess I’m a lurker??

I’m an American, living in England with a British husband and our sweet baby Milo who is growing up way too fast. I have a blog as well, but decided to go private after some not so nice comments. I’d be happy to add you?

Anyhow…I don’t know how I found your blog?? I’ve been reading since our son was born, so 10 months now.

I love all of the mushy kid stuff.

  34. NS says:

    @Emily – Ah, yes, a former expat.

@Abby – Yes, please add me! I really missed your blog when it just up and disappeared. Would love to see how Milo is getting on. I still say he’s one of the cutest babies I’ve ever seen (aside from my own, of course). :)

  35. Abby says:

Do you have a wordpress username? I just need it emailed to me and I can add you. Milo’s going to look like a monster to you he’s grown so much!
