Rookie blogger approaches the computer sheepishly…..

Greetings Noble Savage nation. Making my blogging debut, this is, as I have been affectionately referred to, The Noble Husband. Yes, a WordPress widower called up (literally) at the 11th hour to meet the daily NaBloPoMo requirement.
Sadly TNC has been very sick today and consequently the NS is absolutely shattered from the extra love and attention needed to care for her. Cleaning up all the messiness must have been pretty draining as well.
I fear she may also be coming down with the same bug/virus/fever; in which case I may find myself in the same role tomorrow and you’ll be reading a blog from such celebrities as The Noble Neighbour or The Noble Door-to-Door Salesman.
Anyway, for my moment in the spotlight let me share with you my thoughts on… [scours BBC News]…this. It’s an article about how “Curvy women may be the best bet”. The experts, whoever they may be, suggest that more curvaceous women may be smarter and thus more alluring to men. A picture of the lovely Nigella Lawson, who’s excellent Chicken Pot Pies I made recently, accompanied the article. Typical fluff, hardly worth reading. But then I noticed in the top right of the page the “See Also” section, a bunch of other completely different things that women should do to make themselves more attractive. Sexy walks and slim waists are apparently key factors as well. So I thought to myself how awful it must be to constantly be told what you should and shouldn’t be doing just to make yourself desirable.
Perhaps all the experts were men, I contemplated. An evil plan to make all women neurotic and prevent them from becoming the “experts” themselves. But really, any girly mag you see has the same drivel on it in bold letters on the cover. I can’t remember which the NS reads but they often seem to have something like “10 ways you can improve your looks” or “How to keep the boys interested”. Frankly it sounds absolutely ghastly; men just wouldn’t stand for it. Now that’s not to say that men aren’t willing to make some effort to look ok, dirty clothes and poor hygiene won’t get you very far with anyone, but we have our limits. To quote one of my favourite films – Office Space – “…it’s not that I’m lazy, it’s that I just don’t care”. I just don’t care that much what people think of me and would find it rather insulting if someone constantly tried to make me change.
I suppose its sensationalism. A story has to be shocking or reveal some new finding that experts have meticulously researched. A simple story saying “if you comb your hair, smile a bit and be yourself you’ll probably come across well to others” wouldn’t sell very well would it?

Hi, Noble Husband. First things first, I love that you said “ghastly”. Second, this post makes you bloody fantastic in my book. Now that I’ve sufficiently tortured you with these tired jokes, this was a great blogging debut save the sick baby part. I hope TNC feels better soon, and please tell NS she’s missed.

i agree with charlotte – well done! you surely have made NS proud and have found a loophole to NaBloPoMo, which I’m sure she thoroughly appreciates.
you’re right – women are too hard on ourselves and these articles, tips, obsessions, and social expectations that we buy into are often solidified by the media and advertising industry. unfortunately, men are also buying into this stereotype, leaving us wishing we didn’t ahve to care, but feeling like we should. kudos to you for seeing past the BS and giving your true opinion on the subject. maybe we should all follow the “office space” philosophy!
